Unpopular Costume Opinions

  • I find a lot of popular costume designers (Sandy Powell, Jacqueline Durran, etc) to be really overrated.
  • I hate all things Regency.
  • I'm still mad as fuck that Kate Hawley (Crimson Peak) was snubbed at the Oscars but Powell got 2 nods (Carol AND Cinderella).

Reading Is Fundamental: My reactions to Emma's costumes from "Beauty and the Beast."

I have a bone to pick with Disney as of late. They've been doing a one-step-forward-too-many-steps-back dance recently so when a link to this post showed up in the FaceBook sewing guild I'm in, I got mad at the post (NOT THE POSTER!) but still clicked it anyway and the library is open.

To start off let's talk about the main blue dress:

While we only see the top part of the dress, it actually resembles what is worn in the animated film something that "Cinderella"'s costume designer failed to do but that film failed to do a lot of things. Not sure how I feel about her headband, but overall it's a toot.

Now let's move onto Belle's iconic yellow ball gown:

Okay, I think I'm seeing a trend here and it's spend a fortune to turn a classic costume into a cheap tacky prom dress that looks absolutely nothing like the original AND EVERYONE WILL LURVE IT AND THINK YOU'RE A FUCKIG GENEIUS!! NO!!! DO NOT WANT!! Give me the goddamn original dress (that was actually pretty) not something you found on sale at David's Bridal! The one thing I do like is that there are NO CHEAP GODDAMN BUTTERFLIES CLASHING ON THE DRESS and the beast (aka Adam) looks nice but I boot this look so hard.
The library is now closed.

Ever After 2K18 Blog-venture Part 1: Choosing the dresses

In July of '98, "Ever After: A Cinderella Story" was released in theaters. For me, it has always been one of my favorite costume movies (plus being a source of comfort and support growing up), and since it'll be turning 20 in 2018, I've figured I'd make, not one, but TWO of the dresses.

The first is nicknamed the "Ruins" Gown. This dress is a favorite of mine (it reminds me of Buttercup's red gown from "The Princess Bride") and looks simple enough to to as I still can easily find a good portion of the materials used.

The second, of course, is the iconic "Breathe" Gown. I'm very much aware that everything about this dress is out of my talent (and budget) range but, like I've said, it iconic. It's the first dress that comes to mind when someone mentions "Ever After" and IT'S GOT WINGS DAMMIT! I GET TO BE THE GODDAMN BUTTERFLY THAN HAVE THEM RANDOMLY SPLATTERED ON MY DRESS!!

So, yeah, that's it. I still have to figure out a budget for both gowns, sewing machine repairs/tune-ups, and other stuffs (ie. wing commission) but I'll be updating the process here.

Ever After 2K18: Let's make this happen.

Lush Boxing Day Haul (UK package)

So every December 26, Lush has an annual sale where most of the Holiday stuff is on sale for either half off (UK) or Buy One Get One (US) and the sale lasts until supplies run out. I got stuff from both sites and today (Dec 31) my UK package arrived! So, with my new Scorpion plushie playing as a model/presenter, here's what I got from Lush UK.
